Course Description

CPCS Tower Crane Training Courses are designed for novice and experienced operators wanting to operate tower cranes on construction sites. Pass theory and practical testing to earn a CPCS Red Trained Operator Card.

Understand the responsibilities of a tower crane operator and comply with current health and safety legislation
Identify the main components, controls, safety systems, and operating principles of a tower crane
Carry out pre-use inspections, routine maintenance checks, and accurately report defects before operation
Configure the tower crane correctly for lifting duties, including understanding load charts and rated capacity indicators
Assess lifting operations, crane stability, and environmental factors that affect safe crane use
Operate the tower crane safely to lift, slew, trolley, and accurately place loads while minimising load swing
Communicate with slinger/signallers and other members of the lifting team using recognised signalling methods
Recognise and manage workplace hazards, including overhead services, exclusion zones, and weather conditions
Follow safe procedures when accessing the crane, carrying out operational checks, and securing the crane
Complete lifting operations safely and efficiently in accordance with industry best practice, and current legislation

What PPE do I need?

This course requires the following personal protective equipment:

High visibility jacket
Safety boots
Hard hat

What happens if I fail?

If you do not achieve the theory or practical test, we will do our best to re-book at a reduced rate.

How long does the course take?

Novice tower crane training takes 10 days. This includes theory and practical training and testing.

How long is the CPCS card valid?

The CPCS Red Card is valid for 2 years. Once this expires, you can choose to upgrade to a CPCS Blue Card, valid 5 years.

How to become a tower crane operator in the UK?

This course will teach you the skills and knowledge to operate tower cranes – no experience necessary. This makes it ideal for beginners who want to become tower crane operators.

Is being a tower crane operator hard?
