CPCS Mobile Crane Training Courses are designed for novice and experienced operators wanting to operate mobile cranes on construction sites. Pass theory and practical testing to earn a CPCS Red Trained Operator Card.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the responsibilities of a mobile crane operator and comply with health and safety legislation
  • Identify the main components, controls, safety systems, lifting equipment, and operating principles of a mobile crane
  • Interpret relevant documentation, including lift plans, risk assessments, and method statements
  • Carry out comprehensive pre-use checks and correctly identify, report, and respond to defects
  • Configure and set up the mobile crane safely for lifting operations, including positioning, levelling, and counterweights
  • Set up and use rated capacity indicators and understand crane capacity, stability, load charts, and lifting limitations
  • Safely lift, slew, travel, and place loads while controlling load swing and maintaining a safe working environment
  • Communicate effectively with slingers, follow signals and radio procedures, and comply with lift plans and instructions
  • Recognise and manage hazards including ground conditions, environmental factors, and restricted visibility
  • Safely complete lifting operations, including rigging and de-rigging fly jibs or boom extensions where applicable
  • Dismantle the crane for movement, and carrying out shutdown and securing procedures

You must have passed the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test within the last 2 years.

This course requires the following personal protective equipment:

  • High visibility jacket
  • Safety boots
  • Hard hat

Novice mobile crane training takes 6 days. This includes theory and practical training and testing.

The CPCS Red Card is valid for 2 years. Once this expires, you can choose to upgrade to a CPCS Blue Card, valid 5 years.
