CPCS Compact Crane Courses are designed for novice and experienced operators wanting to operate compact cranes on construction sites. Pass theory and practical testing to earn a CPCS Red Trained Operator Card.

Learning Outcomes

Understand the responsibilities of a compact crane operator and comply with relevant health and safety legislation
Identify the main components, controls, safety systems, lifting equipment, and operating principles of a compact crane
Interpret operator manuals, duties charts, lift plans, risk assessments, and method statements
Carry out comprehensive pre-use checks, identify defects, and follow appropriate defect reporting procedures
Safely configure, position, and prepare the compact crane for lifting operations
Assess load weights, centres of gravity, ground conditions, and lifting capacities to ensure safe lifting operations
Safely lift, slew, travel, and accurately position loads while controlling load swing and following signals and instructions
Select and use appropriate lifting accessories, understanding their limitations and the requirements for safe slinging
Recognise and manage hazards including confined spaces, uneven ground, and proximity to other site activities
Safely shut down, secure, load, unload, lift, or tow the compact crane in accordance with manufacturer requirements

Certification

Upon successful completion, you will receive a CPCS Red Trained Operator Card.

Can beginners take this course?

Novice compact crane training is ideal for beginners. The course covers all the basics in theory and practical training.

What PPE do I need?

This course requires the following personal protective equipment:

High visibility jacket
Safety boots
Hard hat

What happens if I fail?

If you do not achieve the theory or practical test, we will do our best to re-book at a reduced rate.

How long does the course take?

Novice compact crane training takes 4 days. This includes theory and practical training and testing.

How long is the CPCS card valid?

The CPCS Red Card is valid for 2 years. Once this expires, you can choose to upgrade to a CPCS Blue Card, valid 5 years.

What is a compact crane?

Compact cranes are simply miniature cranes. This makes them ideal for lifting operations that take place within confined spaces, where a larger crane would otherwise not fit.

What qualifications do I need to be a crane operator?

CPCS is one of the most widely recognised plant qualification schemes in the UK. Therefore, having a CPCS Card can significantly increase your career opportunities. Most UK construction sites will require employees to hold formal qualifications for the machines they operate.

How much do crane drivers earn?

Crane Operators earn an average annual salary of £27K – £42K, according to Glassdoor. However, this will depend on what qualifications you hold and how long you have been operating.
