This comprehensive guide will break down everything you need to know about the CPCS Blue Card.
What is a CPCS Blue Card?
CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) are the leader in plant machinery skills cards.
Their CPCS Blue Card proves that you have not only completed training and testing, but have also gained industry experience.

Why Upgrade from CPCS Red to Blue?
The CPCS Red Card lasts for 2 years and is usually your first step toward becoming a competent operator.
Whilst you can technically reapply for this card, we always suggest upgrading it once it expires.
This is because the CPCS Blue Card proves to employers that you have relevant industry experience. This can significantly increase work opportunities and even increase salary expectations.
How to Get a CPCS Blue Card
1 – CPCS Red Card
Before you upgrade to a CPCS Red Card, you will have to have completed a CPCS Course.
This proves that you have completed the relevant theory and practical tests.
2 – CITB Health, Safety, and Environment Test
Next, you will need to re-complete the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment Test.
This is because the test only lasts for 2 years and is likely to have expired since completing your CPCS Red Card.
The test lasts 45 minutes and requires a score of at least 45 out of 50 to pass.
Book the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment Test at BAM Construction Training.
3 – NVQ
Finally, you will need to complete an NVQ in the categories you want to upgrade.
Level 2 NVQs are usually all you will need to upgrade from CPCS Red to Blue.
However, there are exceptions—Crane Lift Supervisor (Level 4 NVQ) and Appointed Person (Level 5 NVQ).
NVQs are comprised of an evidence portfolio, including:
• Observations
• Written questions
• Witness testimonials
• Personal discussions
This is not a test, meaning you cannot fail.
This is because NVQs are just a chance for our assessors to shadow you on-site.
During your NVQ visit, our assessor will work hard to ensure that all necessary evidence is collected. If this isn’t possible, the assessor will simply come back another day to collect any remaining evidence.
How Long Does a CPCS Blue Card Last?
CPCS Red Cards are valid for 5 years from the date of application.
CPCS Blue Card Renewal
Once your CPCS Blue Card expires, you can just keep renewing it every 5 years!
