This course equips you with the skills needed to detect utility services and safely excavate holes and trenches.

The course includes a combination of training and assessment, which contribute towards an EUSR Card.

Learning Outcomes

  • Interpret utility plans, drawings, symbols and coded information before excavation begins
  • Safely locate underground utility services using approved detection equipment and recognised industry methods
  • Identify the hazards associated with buried services and understand how to minimise the risk of service strikes
  • Understand the limitations of detection equipment and recognise why some services are more difficult to locate
  • Mark underground services accurately using approved site marking techniques
  • Carry out safe excavation practices using hand tools and hand-held power tools in accordance with HSG47 guidance
  • Maintain safe excavations and follow industry best practice to protect personnel, plant and underground infrastructure
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the legal responsibilities and safe systems of work when excavating near underground utilities

Course Certification

Upon successful completion, you will receive an EUSR Card. This is valid for 3 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, EUSR Cat 1 & 2 is ideal for beginners. The course covers all the basics in theory and practical training.

This course requires the following personal protective equipment:

  • High visibility jacket
  • Safety boots
  • Hard hat

If you do not achieve the theory or practical test, we will do our best to re-book at a reduced rate.

EUSR Cat 1 & 2 combined takes 2 days. Single categories are reduced to just 1 day.

The EUSR Card is valid for 3 years. Once this expires, you may choose to re-complete the course.

No, we offer the option to complete single categories too.
