CPCS Lorry loader Training Courses are designed for novice and experienced operators wanting to operate lorry loaders on construction sites. Pass theory and practical testing to earn a CPCS Red Trained Operator Card.

Learning Outcomes

Understand the responsibilities of a lorry loader operator and comply with relevant health & safety legislation
Identify the main components, controls, safety systems, stabilisers, boom sections, and attachments of a lorry loader
Carry out pre-use checks on both the host vehicle and loader crane, including identifying and reporting defects
Configure and manoeuvre the vehicle safely, including travelling and operating within confined spaces
Position the vehicle and deploy stabilisers correctly to provide a safe and stable platform for lifting operations
Interpret load charts, rated capacity indicators, and assess load weights and centres of gravity
Safely lift, slew, transport, and accurately place loads using appropriate lifting accessories and attachments
Minimise load swing, maintain safe working areas, secure loads correctly, and follow lift plans and signalling procedures
Recognise and manage hazards including ground conditions, load instability, and environmental factors
Carry out safe shutdown, parking, securing, and stowage procedures at the end of lifting operations

What PPE do I need?

This course requires the following personal protective equipment:

High visibility jacket
Safety boots
Hard hat

What happens if I fail?

If you do not achieve the theory or practical test, we will do our best to re-book at a reduced rate.

How long does the course take?

Novice lorry loader training takes 5 days. This includes theory and practical training and testing.

How long is the CPCS card valid?

The CPCS Red Card is valid for 2 years. Once this expires, you can choose to upgrade to a CPCS Blue Card, valid 5 years.

What does a lorry loader do?

HIAB lorry loaders are useful for moving and transporting materials. The benefit of this vehicle is its combined functions. This means that rather than two drivers and two vehicles, you only need one.

How much Do HIAB drivers earn?

HIAB drivers earn an average salary of £24K – £32K, according to Glassdoor. However, this will depend on what qualifications you hold and how long you have been operating.

Do I need a license to operate a HIAB?

You will need a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) licence to operate lorry loaders. Additionally, holding a CPCS Card can significantly increase your career opportunities.
