Learning Outcomes

Understand the roles and responsibilities of a agricultural tractor operator
Identify the main components, controls, instruments, and safety features of an agricultural tractor
Carry out pre-use inspections, routine maintenance checks, and accurately report defects
Prepare the tractor for safe operation, including correct start-up, travel, and shutdown procedures
Travel and manoeuvre the tractor safely across a range of terrains, gradients, and confined working areas
Attach, inspect, adjust, and safely remove mounted and trailed implements using approved procedures
Operate Power Take-Off driven equipment safely while recognising associated hazards and control measures
Understand load stability, towing principles, and the safe operation of trailers and agricultural implements
Identify workplace hazards and implement appropriate control measures
Secure the tractor and its attachments at the end of operations and carrying out post-operational checks

What PPE do I need?

This course requires the following personal protective equipment:

What happens if I fail?

If you do not achieve the theory or practical test, we will do our best to re-book at a reduced rate.

How long does the course take?

Novice agricultural tractor training takes 3 days. This includes theory and practical training and testing.

How long is the CPCS card valid?

The CPCS Red Card is valid for 2 years. Once this expires, you can choose to upgrade to a CPCS Blue Card, valid 5 years.

How to learn to drive a tractor?

Our novice course will teach you the skills and knowledge needed to operate agricultural tractors – no experience necessary. This makes it ideal for beginners who want to become tractor operators.

How much do tractor drivers earn in the UK?

Tractor Operators earn an average of £17.60 per hour, according to Indeed. However, this will depend on what qualifications you hold and how long you have been operating.

Can I drive a tractor on a car licence?

Agricultural tractors require a Category F licence to drive on public roads. Those who hold a Category B licence (standard driving licence) will automatically have Category F entitlement.

What age can you legally drive a tractor in the UK?

You can legally drive a tractor from the age of 16. However, you will be restricted to tractors and tow trailers up to 2.45 metres wide. From age 17, these restrictions do not apply.
