What is a CSCS Labourers Card?

The CSCS Labourers Card, also known as the CSCS Green Card, is an entry-level qualification that can be used to access construction sites for labouring duties. Examples of these duties may include:

  • Lifting and moving materials
  • Operating hand tools/small power tools
  • Supporting skilled workers

How to Get a CSCS Labourers Card

Step 1: Complete the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Operatives.

The test lasts up to 45 minutes and consists of 50 multiple-choice questions about health, safety and environmental awareness. To pass the test, you must answer at least 45 out of 50 questions correctly.

Step 2: Complete a Relevant Health and Safety Qualification.

Choose between the CITB Health and Safety Awareness Course or the NOCN Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment. Both are valid for the CSCS Labourers Card, so it is up to the individual which they choose to complete. Consider your options by viewing their key differences:

CITB Health and Safety Awareness Course

To renew your card, you will need to pass the CITB Health and Safety Awareness Course and CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test.

NOCN Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment

To renew your card, you will only need to pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test. This makes card renewal quicker and cheaper.

Major Updates to the CSCS Labourer Card: February 2025

From February 1st 2025, you will notice changes in how to get a CSCS Labourers Card. The validity of first-time CSCS Green Cards will reduce from 5 years to 2 years. After this initial card expires, you will be able to renew your card for the usual 5 years. Additionally, anyone looking to apply for or renew a CSCS Labourers Card date will need to provide evidence that they are currently employed as a labourer.
