This comprehensive guide will break down everything you need to know about the CPCS Red Card.
What is a CPCS Red Card?
CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) are the leader in plant machinery skills cards.
Their CPCS Red Cards are an entry-level qualification for those looking to start a career in plant operation. Having the skills card proves to employers that you have received adequate training in a particular role.
The scheme has over 60 categories—covering every role from Vehicle Marshaller to Appointed Person.
How to Get a CPCS Red Card
1 – CITB Health, Safety, and Environment Test
First, you will need to complete the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment Test.
This is designed to test your basic health and safety knowledge—reviewing concepts like signage and PPE.
The test lasts 45 minutes and requires a score of at least 45 out of 50 to pass.
Book the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment Test at BAM Construction Training.
2 – CPCS Course (Training & Testing)
CPCS courses are ideal for anyone looking to start a career in plant operations.
Courses are designed with beginners in mind and cover everything you need to know (right from the basics!)
Theory Training & Testing
Theory training will make sure you have working technical knowledge. This will be tested during a 1-to-1 verbal discussion with one of our assessors, which has an 80% pass mark.
Practical Training & Testing
Practical training will make sure you can demonstrate how to operate safely. This will be tested through a 1-to-1 observation of your skills in practice.
How Long Does a CPCS Red Card Last?
CPCS Red Cards are valid for 2 years from the date of testing.
CPCS Red Card Renewal
Once your CPCS Red Card expires, we encourage you to upgrade to a CPCS Blue Card.
This boosts you from a ‘Trained Operator’ to a ‘Competent Operator’ through completion of an NVQ.
Find out more in our Guide to CPCS Blue Cards.
CPCS Red Card Extension
CPCS card extensions are available if you have not yet upgraded to a CPCS Blue Card. This delays your card expiry by an extra year, to allow you time to complete the NVQ.
