What is a CPCS Blue Card?

The CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card demonstrates that you have the abilities and real-world experience to operate particular items of plant machinery or perform a particular role on site.

The card lasts 5 years and is often the next step for those who hold the CPCS Red Card.

The CPCS Blue Card Renewal Process

Once your CPCS Blue Card has expired, you have up to 5 years to renew it.

Step 1: Pass the CITB Health Safety & Environment Test

The CITB Health & Safety Test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions, which must be completed within the 45-minute time limit. You must answer at least 45 out of 50 questions correctly to pass the test.

Step 2: Complete the CPCS Renewal CPD

The CPCS Renewal CPD is a set of e-learning courses. Unlike the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test these cannot be failed and have no strict time limit. Learn more about the CPCS Renewal CPD.

CPCS Renewal CPD – Lifting and Lifting Equipment

CPCS Renewal CPD – Piling and Pumping of Materials

CPCS Renewal CPD – Demolition

Complete your CPCS Renewal CPD via the NOCN Hub.

Step 3: Demonstrate Ongoing Experience

The CPCS Blue Card proves that you have real-world experience, which must be proven before renewing your card. This should evidence any experience gained after you completed your NVQ.

Step 4: Apply for the CPCS Blue Card Renewal

CPCS Blue Card Renewal: Industry Accreditation (Grandfather Rights)

From December 2024, CPCS phased out any cards gained through Industry Accreditation. If this applies to you, make sure to complete a CPCS Competency Interview to avoid losing your card.
