4 Reasons Every Plant Operator Should Be CPCS Trained

CPCS is a widely recognised qualification scheme used in the construction industry. This scheme demonstrates that individuals have the knowledge and competence to work as a plant operator.

The scheme was established in 2003 to apply common standards of work practice for all plant operators.

Here are 5 reasons why every plant operator in the UK should be CPCS trained:

1. Health & Safety

The Health and Safety Executive identified that machinery operations contribute to many work-related accidents (Statista, 2024). These include:

• Being hit by a moving vehicle or object.

• Being trapped by an overturned vehicle.

• Being near moving machinery.

To gain a CPCS Red Card, delegates must complete the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test. Delegates must also complete theory and practical assessments relevant to a chosen item of plant machinery.

This helps to ensure consistent training standards and ensures that all plant operators are safe and competent.

2. Proof Of Skills

The Construction Industry Training Board estimates over 250,000 additional workers will be required by 2028. This is to meet plans to build new towns across the country (Financial Times, 2025).

Employment in the construction industry is near a two-decade low. The construction industry needs to attract new workers to secure the continued growth and development of the industry.

CPCS courses provide workers with the knowledge and skills to secure a job as a qualified plant operator. CPCS courses teach delegates core skills, knowledge and understanding that can be applied in the workplace.

3. Future Qualifications

CPCS allows delegates to pursue personal development and future career progression.

For example, delegates can upgrade from a CPCS Red Card to a CPCS Blue Card by completing an NVQ.

This upgrades delegates from “trained” to “competent”, increasing career opportunities by demonstrating their ongoing experience in plant operation.

4. Earning Capacity

The hourly rate for plant operators ranges. However, the current rate stands at £16.12 per hour (Indeed, 2025).

Delegates who meet one of the points below may earn more per hour. This is compared to a plant operator who does not have a CPCS card.

• Competence in several categories

• Ongoing experience in one category
